Dancing With the Stars: Is it a Popularity Contest?
Season 13 of “Dancing with the Stars” has seen very unpredictable eliminations, and audiences are wondering how contestant Chaz Bono has remained safe on the show.
Last week’s elimination of talented singer-turned-dancer, Chynna Phillips, resulted in more questions about whether the show is a dance competition or not.
“It really does come down to the votes, and that’s kind of sad because it’s supposed to be a dance competition, but it’s actually a popularity contest,” Phillips told The Huffington Post after being eliminated.
“You have to have a little faith that there are people out there who are truly voting for their favorite dance, not their favorite person, because it is a dance competition and people are working really hard,” she added.
Fashion expert Carson Kressley was eliminated from the show Tuesday after receiving weak results for his performance. The former “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” star has also criticized the show, saying that the judges were harsh.
“We’re used to them being harsh, but I thought they were extra harsh,” said Kressley following Monday’s performance. “They weren’t accurate or fair. I’m not going to complain, because it’s over. The scores are what they are.”
Kressley also pointed out another critique of the “DWTS” Judge’s panel.
“We can dance and have fun at the same time,” said Kressley backstage on the show. “That’s called entertaining… I think sometimes our showmanship is overlooked.”
Bono and his partner, Lacey Schwimmer, have remained the bottom scorers so far this season. Bono’s mother, Cher, who often appears in the audience during performances, posted a comment about her son Tuesday. Even she acknowledged surprise of Bono’s longevity on the show.
“Chaz did GREAT 2nite THIS IS AMAZING! It’s A dream come true WAIT! It’s more than a dream! I’m sure he NEVER DREAMT HE’D STILL B THERE” Cher wrote after Bono’s performance Monday.
Viewers of the show also posted their surprise and disappointment following Tuesday’s elimination, and many wonder how Chaz Bono has remained on the show despite weak performances.
“I am getting disgusted with DWTS, Chaz stays? Just crazy,” wrote Twitter user Mike.
Diandra wrote, “Whyyy did Carson & Anna get voted off DWTS? Chaz needs to go!”
Ty added his opinion, writing, “Well Im glad they got rid of Carson from #DWTS! Chaz and Nancy better be next!”
Next week’s “DWTS” will feature a Broadway Hits theme, and airs on ABC Monday at 8 p.m. EST.
