Demi Lovato 'Dark and Deep Struggles' Nearly Derailed Career

Actress and singer Demi Lovato has a lot going for her these days, including a new book entitled "Staying Strong: 365 Days a Year." Yet Lovato recently revealed that she had been through a very dark period in her life and wanted to encourage others who may be going through something similar.

"When I was in treatment, I honestly thought my career was over," Lovato told Entertainment Weekly. "But when I came out of treatment, I had more supportive fans than ever. I'm battling with internal thoughts on how honest I should be," she said of her role on the "X Factor."

"Yes, I've been very honest, but if people really knew how dark and deep my struggles got – not just with my eating disorder but with drugs and alcohol – they'd be really shocked. But I'll most likely end up saying everything. Maybe it'll help other people in the industry who are headed down the wrong path," Lovato said.

She noted that she used to have the perfect excuse to do "whatever the [expletive] I wanted and not give a [expletive] about what other people thought. Then I ended up going through some stuff. I realized I'm never going to escape the fact that I'm in the public eye, so I might as well do the best I can."

Lovato has worked hard to develop a successful career in both the music and acting professions. Not only does she have a hit album under her belt, Lovato is a judge on "X Factor" and recently took a role on "Glee." Now, not only does she have her devotional book coming out on Nov. 14, Lovato has also signed a contract to write her memoirs.

She is a passionate advocate for those teens and other young people who suffer from mental health challenges, and in May 2013, Lovato was presented a special award for her work.
