Doritos Locos Tacos Created 15,000 Jobs, CEO Says
Taco Bell's Doritos Locos Tacos are easily one of the most popular items on the chain's menu. CEO Greg Creed has spoken out about the tacos' popularity, which he alleges created 15,000 jobs for workers.
According to Creed, nearly 1 million of the Doritos tacos are sold every single day. The company initially started out with Nacho Cheese Doritos Locos Tacos, which quickly gained the public's favor and became an instant sensation. The company recently released Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Tacos, which became just as popular.
Those products required Taco Bell to hire approximately 15,000 people for the Yum! Brands sect of the company. The Yum! Brands group is constantly working on developing new products and partnering with other popular brands.
"It's very possible because two things happened. One is we grew the business, and that's great, it makes us feel really good. It's great we sold lots of tacos and it's great for our shareholders, but if can get 15,000 people off the unemployment line and give them jobs– that to me is giving back to society. That is having a social conscience in doing the right thing. That's really important to me," Creed told ABC News.
Of course, Taco Bell has faced enormous criticism for its continued growth as the country faces an obesity epidemic. Yet Creed maintains that Taco Bell is working on adding "more and more items" to its healthier menu.
"There's no simple solutions for very complex problems. And there's no doubt obesity is an issue, so I'm not denying it, and that's why we are trying to add more and more items. We're doing more work; in the 12 months there will [be] more new products coming out that will have even lower calorie count, lower sodium, lower fat," Creed explained.
Up next for the chain, though, is the release of the Doritos Flamas taco, which is based in part on Frito Lay's chili-lime flavored Doritos.
"It's an amazing product. It's spicy but it has a lime aftertaste. You feel this real spiciness, and then the Frito Lay people are so magical with their seasoning, you get this lovely lime spiciness that sort of cools your mouth," Creed revealed.
