'Downton Abbey' Season 5 Spoilers: Did Bates Kill Anna's Rapist?
"Downton Abbey" fans are in for a treat and plenty of entertaining drama in the upcoming season, which the cast and producers revealed teasers about. Read on for a few spoilers about season 5, which will not air in the United States until next year.
"It was an eye-opening experience," actress Joanne Froggatt, who plays maid Anna, said of her character's rape during season four. "But for a person of Anna's status, her reputation is all she has and she wouldn't want to lose her good name."
That leads to one of the biggest questions to be answered in the upcoming season – did her husband, Mr. Bates, kill her rapist? Evidence suggesting that he did was found in the final episode of season four, and several of the Crowley house decided to protect Bates from prosecution. But the question remains – did he actually commit murder or was it merely coincidence?

"We don't know what he's capable of," creator Juliann Fellowes said of Bates. "Well, I do, but you all don't."
Another character with her own romance problems is kitchen maid Daisy. She lost the only man she truly loved last season, as he pursued his own career in the kitchen. Actress Sophie McPhera has reportedly said that she will discuss and even beg Fellowes for her own romance and happy ending. However, it could be difficult given Anna's lower status. Odds are that she would have to find someone of her social status in order to have a true romance.
"The problem with a workplace romance is that it takes place in front of you," Fellowes said.
Fellowes revealed that the storyline with the death of Matthew Crowley, and Lady Mary's struggle afterward was rooted in a true story told to him before he even started writing "Downton." He wanted to share the story with others, given that "that generation kept its secrets."
The cast is excited to begin working on the new season of "Downton Abbey."
