'Downton Abbey' Spoilers Leaked by Cast, Executive Producer
"Downton Abbey" will premiere in January here in the U.S. but viewers can read on for a few choice spoilers leaked by the cast and creators of the popular show.
The upcoming season will pick up just a few months after Matthew Crowley was killed in a car accident moments after the birth of his first son. Michelle Dockery, who plays Mary Crawley, spoke about her initial reaction to her TV-husband's death.
"My first reaction was, 'Oh, crap.' Initially I was concerned, but now I'm not. It's a very different season from what it could've been," Dockery said at the Television Critics Association gathering. "She's slowly, over the course of the series, coming back to life," Dockery said of her character. "It's important for her to move on."
One other big teaser concerns Edith Crowley, who had begun a new job as a writer in London at the end of the season. Edith has always been a background character trying to strike out on her own. "Abbey" executive producer Gareth Neame hinted that Edith will receive much more air time this season.
"It is really a very different season for Edith this year," Neame said. "It's a very active story."
Fans will have to wait until January to learn more about Edith's story and whether she will finally make a name for herself.
This season will also feature the loss of villain Sarah O'Brien, played by Siobhan Finneran, though it is unknown how she will be written out of the series. There is a possibility that she will be transferred to another family and move to India with them.
"I'm not doing any more," Finneran told the Huffington Post. "O'Brien is a thoroughly despicable human being – that was great to play."
Widow Mary and widower Tom both go through several suitors but reportedly end up finding love and moving on from their heartbreak. Both will have to deal with raising their son and daughter, respectively, on their own.
