Facebook to Announce Music Platform at f8 Conference

Facebook may be announcing a new music and/or video service with websites such as Spotify and Rhapsody at its upcoming f8 developer conference Thursday, according to several media reports.

The New York Times says it has confirmation of these new services and how they will appear on user's profiles through information obtained from their anonymous industry sources. They also state that Facebook "will unveil a media platform that will allow people to easily share their favorite music, television shows, and movies, effectively making the basic profile page a primary entertainment hub."

Dutch entrepreneur and computer developer Yvo Schaap recently came across some clues in the HTML code for websites such as Spotify that suggests some type of Facebook integration.

The New York Post also reported that Facebook and Hulu will make an announcement at their f8 developer conference concerning a deeper integration of their two sites. Movie-sharing service Netflix was also mentioned as another rumored Facebook service partner.

The New York Times article details music services and talks of the linked-to songs as being offered for free to those who click on the special links. MOG and rival Rdio have not divulged details on how much free music would be offered to users.

The Facebook music and video service will reportedly enable users to post links to the music they're listening to and the movies or music videos they're watching. Their Facebook friends will be get the chance to click directly to the content and check it out for themselves. The links will appear in a Facebook user's news feed, or on a tab or in a widget incorporated into user profiles.

Other notable music and movie sharing services such as Spotify, Rhapsody, Rdio, MOG, French company Deezer, and music video site Vevo – all services mentioned by HTML code expert Schaap – may be among the group of companies signing on to this arrangement. Five other music services, including Soundcloud, will be involved, according to Schapp.

Rhapsody just announced its Facebook partnership plans earlier today.

Facebook is expected to make an official announcement on its planned music and video services this at their press conference this coming Thursday.
