Foo Fighters Win Five Grammy Awards During Show, Overshadowed by Houston's Death
The 54th annual Grammy Awards were nothing short of fantastic for the Foo Fighters even considering the somber tone of the evening after the news of Whitney Houston's death the night before.
While the main headline for the evening was Adele and her six Grammys, Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters also had a smash-up night taking five coveted awards, including Best Rock Album for "Wasting Light," best hard rock and metal performance for "White Limo," and best rock song for "Walk."
While Grohl was accepting one of his band's five awards he gave a heartfelt speech declaring that the group made songs from their album "Wasting Light" in his garage.
"To me this award means a lot because it shows that the human element of making music is what's most important. Singing into a microphone, learning to play an instrument and learning to do your craft, that's the most important thing for people to do," said Grohl.
The lead singer continued to state that "it's not about being perfect. It's not about sounding absolutely correct. It's not about what goes on in a computer. It's about what goes on in here (pointing to his heart) and what goes on here (pointing to his head) … Long live rock 'n' roll!"
Throughout the whole evening everyone's hearts and prayers were with Houston and her family. The most touching moment of the night came when Jennifer Hudson came on stage to perform one of Houston's iconic songs, "I Will Always Love You."
During the performance Hudson appeared to fight back tears as she sang the song, ending with the line, "Whitney, we will always love you."
Host LL Cool J started the show on a somber note appearing in black, he led the audience in prayer.
"Heavenly father, we thank you for sharing our sister Whitney with us …Though she is gone too soon, we remain truly blessed to have been touched by her beautiful spirit," said the host.
