Gaddafi Dead: NTC Says Bloody Death of Strongman 'Unintentional' (VIDEO)
With the plethora of conflicting reports coming out about the death of Col. Muammar Gaddafi, a member from Libya’s National Transitional Council has come out to discuss that Gaddafi was not killed “intentionally.”
The council member described the death scenario to CNN saying that once the rebels had captured the former “iron fist” leader they found themselves in a cross fire on the drive from Sirte, Gaddafi's hometown where he was ultimately captured, to Misrata.
According to the NTC member, Gaddafi was killed in the crossfire.
The member said that it remains unclear if the bullet wound on Gaddafi’s head came from up close or from a distance, but said that ultimately that the death of Gaddafi was “unintentional.”
The council member said that no one decided to “kill him or slaughter him” as it would have been better for the NTC for Gaddafi to remain alive.
He said, “It would have been better for us Libyans, and the whole universe, to capture him and take him to a court and see how a dictator, a bad guy, who killed lots of Libyans and non-Libyan’s be judged in front of a court.”
However, many have questioned the circumstances surrounding the death of Gaddafi with some saying that his head wounds display that he was likely executed.
The U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights has said that the death of Gaddafi needs to be investigated and that the circumstances surrounding his death remain “unclear.”
Libyan officials have postponed the burial of Gaddafi to enable further investigation into the death of the 69-year-old former “king of kings.”
The final moments of Gaddafi’s life are shrouded in confusion as conflicting reports have surfaced about exactly how the strongman died and who fired the gun that actually killed him.
Initially reports suggested that he was executed by revolutionary forces in front of a mob of fighters, others have suggested that Gaddafi was actually killed by one of his own bodyguards to spare him further humiliation.
Rupert Colville, spokesman for the office of U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights told the BBC that the death of Gaddafi could have been illegal.
Colville said, “People get killed in wars and that is recognized clearly in international law. On the other hand, it is also very clear under international law that summary executions, extra-judicial killings, are illegal.”
Presently, the body of Gaddafi is being kept in a cold storage in Misrata for investigation. NTC officials have reported that Gaddafi will be buried in a Misrata in a religious ceremony, however, the burial will be a break with Muslim tradition, which dictates that the dead are buried within 24-hours of their death.
According to reports, some of Gaddafi’s last words to the rebels were, “Do you know right from wrong?”
