Instead of using the same design, the Note 3 and S5 Samsung chose to move in different directions for each. The fronts of the devices resemble each other, however, the backings are very different. Samsung used its new "glam" perforated back plate on the Galaxy S5 that shines in certain lighting and created a leather like plastic backing for the Note 3. The Galaxy Note 3 features an advanced version of the S Pen with accompanying apps. The Galaxy S5 comes with a Heart Rate Monitor and other modes that cater to those interested in staying fit. The S Pen has always been a fun accessory and works better than ever on the Note 3. The extras on the S5 only cater to a specific audience, making it less interesting. The Note 3 definitely has more widespread appeal in this department.
