Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition Android 4.4, KitKat Update Begins Rolling Out
The Android 4.4, KitKat update began rolling out for the Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition this week.
Android announced the news via Google+ yesterday, stating: "Starting today, Samsung GS4 and HTC One Google Play edition devices are getting an update to Android 4.4! Learn more about Android 4.4, KitKat."
The HTC One Google Play Edition Android 4.4, KitKat update began rolling out before the Galaxy S4 model, but now both upgrades are available OTA (over-the-air) and bring the software versions to Android 4.4 KRT16S. It includes fixes that Google applied last week to quash bugs pertaining to radio connectivity and encryption for the HTC One.
The file weighs 305MB and can be side-loaded using ADB, or directly to the device by using the "update from the phone storage" option.
The new update does not give the Google Play GS4 or HTC One the Google Experience Launcher from the Nexus 5. Users who want it can side-load its .apk file or use Nova or another launcher that mimics the functionality of GEL.
Meanwhile, the HTC One Android 4.4 KitKat update for Verizon will begin rolling out by the end of January, the company confirmed through its Twitter account last week.
"HTC One VZW customers: delay with 4.3 update does not impact delivery of 4.4 by end of January-still on track," tweeted HTC USA.
In order to receive KitKat, the device must first be upgraded to Android 4.3, JellyBean. HTC promises to have that version of the software fully rolled out by the end of December.
"Delivering 4.3 on VZW will be a two step process," tweeted the company. "First update for compatibility happening this week, followed by Android OS update in Dec."
International HTC One owners will receive KitKat sometime in January, according to a statement made by HTC U.K.
