'Game of Thrones' Finale: Director Says Shocking Death Will 'Dramatically' Alter Next Season, Promises 'Madness' for Daenerys
"Game of Thrones" season four came to a close on HBO Sunday with a shocking finale that saw another death of a character.
While "GOT" fans must wait until next year for season five, the television series' director Alex Graves reflected on season four, including the send-off of a special actor. Warning: if you have not yet watched Sunday, June 15's episode entitled "The Children," there are spoilers ahead.
In a recent interview, Graves opened up about the death of Tywin Lannister at the hands of his son, Tyrion Lannister, in "The Children." Furthermore, the director cited difficulty of parting ways with the actor who portrayed Tywin, Charles Dance.
"It was a big thing because everyone's crazy about Charles and crazy about Tywin," Graves told People.com following Sunday's finale. "I had a big speech about Charles with [creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss] and we all applauded him and celebrated him and he was very touched. And there [was the] usual joking around but it was really pleasant."
In addition to the emotional goodbye, Graves promised that Tywin's death will "dramtically" alter the future of "GOT."
"It's going to shuffle the chess game dramatically," he said. "The whole episode really resets the show and takes it into a territory that no finale ever has. The truth is it's the big turning point in the middle of the book series where we really turn left and head towards new ground."
Graves also disclosed hints about the future for the Mother of Dragons- Daenerys, portrayed by Emilia Clarke.
"The dragons are killing people and can't really be controlled, so she has to seal the dragons away, in theory, forever," Graves explained. "It really ends with her completely destroyed, and [she's] lost everything she's got just so she can try to rule. Given the Targaryen blood, you begin to see a little bit of madness and that's about the future of her character."
