Google Purchases Motorola to 'Supercharge' Android for Apple Battle

In an effort to expand its reach, Google has made the largest purchase in the company’s history today buying the Motorola Mobility smartphone and tablet business for $12.5 billion in cash.

The Internet search giant has purchased the mobile phone company in order to expand its ownership of intellectual property in the field, and to move into developing hardware for its software in terms of expanding upon and further developing Android devices.

Both Motorola and Google argue that the purchase will lead to a “supercharge” of Google’s Android platform.

The purchase will give Google the ownership title to a large holding of patents that will likely protect the company from being sued by its competitors in the future.

Even though Google has purchased the company, it will run Motorola as a separate company.

Google CEO Larry Page wrote in a company blog posting of the purchase, “We recently explained how companies including Microsoft and Apple are banding together in anti-competitive patent attacks on Android.

“Our acquisition of Motorola will increase competition by strengthening Google’s patent portfolio, which will enable us to better protect Android from anti-competitive threats from Microsoft, Apple, and other companies.”

Page has also said of the acquisition, “Together, we will create amazing user experiences that supercharge the entire Android ecosystem for the benefit of consumers, partners, and developers.”

Bringing Motorola into its possession seems to be a move by Google to counteract the domination of Apple in the smartphone industry with its iconic iPhone series.

The deal may require government approval, however, if all goes through it is expected to be completed by late 2011 or in the early months of the upcoming year.

The deal is already being dubbed as a future “game-changer” in the world of smartphones.
