Gospel Musical 'Joyful Noise' Premieres to Mixed Reviews (PHOTOS)
Celebrities gathered at the Grauman's Chinese Theater in Los Angeles on Jan. 9, 2012, for the premiere of "Joyful Noise," and critics have sounded off with their take of the film.
Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah star in the film, playing the roles of two women who compete over their choir's musical direction in a small Georgia church.
Although the Green Bay Press Gazette refers to the film as a "big screen equivalent of a sloppy smooch from your over-affectionate aunt over the holidays," it does praise the film's musical talent.
"But the music — which includes gospel takes on 'Maybe I’m Amazed,' 'Man in the Mirror' and Sly and the Family Stone’s 'Higher,' makes this a fine showcase for the voices, and everybody gets his or her solo," the publication notes.
Us Weekly concurred, commenting in its review: "There's a lot to like about this 'Glee/Sister Act' mashup — but only when its stars are singing."
The Associated Press chimed in, noting: "If some incarnation of 'Glee' were to be developed for the Christian Broadcasting Network, it would probably look a lot like 'Joyful Noise.' "
"Joyful Noise" hits theaters nationwide this Friday, Jan. 13.
