Homeless Man Returns Diamond Ring to Owner; Says Reverend Grandpa to Thank (VIDEO)
A homeless man has returned a diamond ring accidentally left in his beggar's cup by a woman in a hurry. The act surprised not only the woman, who thought she'd never see it again, but also the entire country.
"It seemed like a miracle," Sarah Darling told KCTV. "I thought for sure there was no way I would get it back."
Darling had given a donation to the homeless man, Billy Ray Harris, who was on the street with a cup for donations. When she emptied her wallet to give him her spare change, the ring, which she had taken off and put in the purse, also fell into the cup. Darling then walked off, unaware of what had happened.
"I was so incredibly upset because, more than just the value of the ring, it had sentimental value," Darling noted. So the next day she went back to find Harris and ask him an important question.
"She squatted down like you did right there and says, 'Do you remember me?' And I was like, 'I don't know. I see a lot of faces.' She says, 'I might have given you something very valuable.' I said, 'Was it a ring?' And she says, 'Yeah.' And I said, 'Well, I have it,'" Harris recounted.
This wasn't the first time Harris returned a valuable item, according to a story told to KCTV. He allegedly found a retired NFL player's Super Bowl ring on the sidewalk and managed to return it to its owner. In addition to a financial reward, the hotel where the football player was staying gave him a complimentary three-night stay.
While some may wonder why Harris didn't pawn either ring in order to raise much-needed money for himself, he claims the idea never crossed his mind.
"My grandfather was a reverend," he explained. "He raised me from the time I was six months old and thank the good Lord, it's a blessing, but I do still have some character."
"I think in our world we often jump to the worst conclusion, and it just makes you realize that there are good people out there," Darling added.
Those who have heard the story have championed Harris' actions and wished him good fortune in the future.
"What a sweet, wonderful soul. God bless him," Lady posted on Yahoo.
"America needs more of your character. Good job, man!" IJB added.
