IBS Sends 350,000 Bibles to U.S. Troops in Iraq, Afghanistan

The International Bible Society recently distributed 350,000 Bibles to American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan in an effort to encourage and support the troops.

As the United States celebrates its Independence on Monday, the International Bible Society distributed 350,000 Bibles to American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan in an effort to encourage and support the men and women serving their country.

Through its Military Chaplain Outreach, IBS provides special “desert camo” Bibles to troops in the Middle East, troops preparing for deployment, and troops remaining at home station. IBS sends the Scriptures to military chaplains, who distribute them to their service members. Priority is given to Reserve and National Guard Chaplains because they typically have little or no funds to purchase Scriptures.

IBS hasn't forgotten about these men and women serving their country, IBS President Peter Bradley told Mission Network News (MNN) in a recent interview.

According to Bradley, the special “desert camo” Bibles are “designed with a special camouflage cover and also the trim size is such that it just fits in their pocket of their cargo pants, which is very helpful for them.”

Bradley says soldiers are in a unique position to think about Christ. "That old saying, 'there are no atheists in on the front-line or in a fox hole' I think is absolutely true. It's just a joy to think that these military combat front-liners have a Scripture portion or a Bible in their pocket that they can refer to in times of need like that," he told MNN.

Since 1812, IBS has distributed Scripture to U.S. troops in every war.

“We're hearing just a wonderful response from chaplains abroad about how our troops are so responding to the Gospel – baptisms, people accepting Jesus," Bradley reported.

Founded in New York City in 1809, IBS carries out its ministry through centers in more than 50 countries around the world, distributing resources for "Scripture-based" evangelism and discipleship worldwide.

IBS, both independently and in partnership with churches and other ministries, has provided God's Word to numerous cross-sections of society around the world. There are currently more than 250 of these outreach projects in progress.
