Intel Confirms Android-Powered Notebooks to Launch for $200

Google and Intel are partnering up to release a new line of Notebooks that will cost just $200, according to a recent report from CNET.

Intel executive VP and chief product officer Dadi Perlmutter recently told the publication that Notebooks running Android priced at $200 are on the way. These devices will utilize Intel's Atom mobile processor. He also stated that Microsoft could make that same move, however, that all depends on if they could charge that low for something running Windows 8.

"We have good technology that enables a very cost-effective price point," he said. The price of Windows 8 laptops "depends on how Microsoft prices Windows 8. It may be a slightly higher price point."

Chromebooks have failed to make a signification impact in the market. Compact notebooks running Android might have a better chance at doing so.

Perlmutter did not describe what these Android notebooks would look like. CNET stated that they will most likely be convertible-type devices.

These cheaper laptops will use Intel's Atom chips, and the devices running Intel's mainstream Core line could sell for as low as $399 to $499. High-end Atom devices will be closer to these prices.

Intel plans to ship data-only multimode LTE processors by the middle of the year and multimode voice over LTE and data processers later in 2013, according to Perlmutter. The company currently offers a single-mode LTE chip which limits the processors overall market.

The mobile market is currently dominated by companies such as Qualcomm that have created multimode LTE chips used in the iPhone 5 and Galaxy S4. Intel will introduce a mobile chip which combines the LTE connection with the processor sometime in 2014. This will allow the company to better compete in the smartphone and tablet market.
