iPad 3 Impending Release Sparks Discount on iPad 2

Best Buy seems to have dropped the price on the iPad 2 in anticipation of an early March release of the iPad 3.

Rumors have been circling since the middle of last year regarding the iPad 3's release date with most publications now agreeing that there is a strong chance the device could launch as early as March 7.

Customers can pick up a 16GB Wi-Fi-only iPad 2 for just $449.99, down from $499.99. The 64GB model that includes both Wi-Fi and 3G capability is available at Best Buy for $779.99, down from $829.99.

Best Buy has not released any comments regarding its decision to issue this discount, but the most logical explanation is that the launch of the iPad 3 will be here very soon.

Retailers will begin to lower the price on the current iPad in order to empty their stock and make room for the next-generation version.

Apple refuses to comment on rumors before it launches a device. The company has not made any announcements regarding the release date of the iPad 3. Most of these proposed dates are derived from information that originates from supply chain workers.

The company also has not released any information regarding the specifications of the iPad 3. Most rumors point to the tablet featuring a retina display, doubling the resolution of the current iPad, which has 1024 x 768 pixel resolution.

The device is also rumored to be Apple's first 4G LTE tablet using networks from AT&T, Verizon and Sprint. The current iPad runs on 3G networks.

The iPad 2 was unveiled by Apple on March 2 of last year by Steve Jobs. It went on sale the next week on March 11, 2011.
