iPhone 5.com Domain Name Now Belongs to Apple
Apple has reportedly acquired the iPhone5.com domain name from a squatter who was using it for a forum full of ads, according to The Next Web.
The company filed a dispute with the World Intellectual Property Organization earlier this year, and now it seems that the iPhone creator has received its request.
The squatter has relinquished all control of the domain and has now been moved to a brand protection agency, according to The Next Web. Apple could be using this to take control.
Just because Apple cleared the domain, does not mean that its next smartphone will be called the iPhone 5. The company enjoys taking its rightful domain names back from squatters, and that seems to be the case in this situation.
Apple has reportedly been working on acquiring a variety of domain names related to its products.
The company has already secured the rights to iPhone4s.com, iPhoneporn4s.com, iphonesex4s.com, iphonexxxforce.com and other domains being used by an adult website operator.
Apple also won disputes with WIPO over websites that were using the company's name including applesales.com, appleproductsonline.com, appleipods.com, and ipods.com.
Back in July of 2011, the company acquired the rights for both iPhone4.com and WhiteiPhone.com for an undisclosed amount after opting to pay for the domain names.
This took place over a year after the device was launched.
The name for the next iPhone has been up in the air since it will be the sixth generation iPhone. It would have made more sense to call the 4S the 5 since it was the true fifth-generation version. "The new iPhone" branding would make sense, since Apple has already branded the iPad in a similar way.
The smartphone is expected to launch sometime in the fall of this year.
