iPhone 5 Release Date: Apple Losing Ground to Android, HTC, Samsung?
Recent reports and statistics have surfaced showing Apple losing market share to Android, a platform that has been growing at a rapid pace.
Apple has also been losing in terms of handset sales to companies such as HTC and Samsung.
But most of the statistics collected for these results derive from the number of products shipped and sold.
In other words, the data collectors examined how many handsets were shipped and determined market share based on who sent out the most items to retailers.
This is not the best way to determine the leaders in the market, according to 9to5Mac.
"Market share numbers and shipped vs. sold units can be deceiving and (too) often fail to paint an accurate picture of the mobile space," wrote the site. "One of the most precise methodologies for measuring the impact of any given mobile platform includes tracking web browser clients in order to determine the number of devices in the wild being actually used."
Net Applications recently collected data based on operating systems that were used more frequently by mobile phone users.
Its findings showed that Apple’s web usage share has increased in the month of October by seven percentage points to 61.64 percent.
Androids web usage share also rose but only to 18.9 percent from 16.9.
This rise of iOS users can be attributed to the release of the iPhone 4S, a device that is arguably Apple’s best selling handset of all time.
iPhone 4S launched on Oct. 14 and went on to sell four million units.
Most of these figures showing Apple losing to these other companies are from the last quarter and do not factor in the iPhone 4S release.
These new numbers show that Apple most likely fell behind due to its customers waiting for the 4S.
