Jason Collins Ex-Fiance Says He's No Hero
Jason Collins, the NBA veteran who announced he was gay earlier this year, is no hero according to his former fiance who is speaking out about the way he has been revealing his sexual preference to the world.
While Collins' ex-love interest former WNBA player Carolyn Moos, was with Collins for eight years and planned to marry the 34-year-old Washington Wizards center before he called off their wedding in 2009. Moos said she had no idea Collins was gay and that her former fiance gave her unspecified reasons for wanting to call their union quits, TMZ reported.
Now she is detailing her pain in Cosmopolitan magazine.
"A month before I was set to marry the man I loved, he called off the wedding. I had no idea why," Moos told Cosmopolitan. "We had planned to have children, build a family. Nearly four years later, I got my answer. "
While everyone from Oprah Winfrey to former president Bill Clinton lauded Collins' decision to reveal he was a homosexual in Sports Illustrated magazine last spring, Moos insisted her former boyfriend was less than heroic.
"I feel like there are two Jasons now-the man I fell in love with and the man I'm trying so hard to understand," Moos told Cosmopolitan. "He's being hailed as a pioneer, but I believe true heroism is a result of being honest with yourself and with those you love."
Moos explained why she was so hurt by Collins' recent coming out about his sexual orientation in the media.
"I am sad that the media seems to be a higher priority," she told Cosmopolitan. "I hope this changes in the coming weeks, as I value open dialogue more than anything."
While Moos insists that she supports Collins, she also admitted that she was still hurt by his actions.
"I empathize with Jason and support him. But at the same time, I remain deeply hurt by him," she told Cosmopolitan. "I wish he could have been honest with me years ago."
