Jennifer Lawrence on Body Haters: 'Screw Those People,' I Won't Diet
Jennifer Lawrence told body haters that she doesn't care about what they think in a recent interview, much to the delight of the "Hunger Games" star's fans. The Oscar-winning actress said that critics and Hollywood executives tried to shame her into losing weight, and discussed how it hurt her feelings.
Jennifer Lawrence revealed her problems with body haters in an interview with Yahoo! to promote her latest film, Hunger Games sequel "Catching Fire." Her advice to others dealing with the same issues was simple: "screw those people."
"You look like you look, and be comfortable. What are you going to do- be hungry every single day to make other people happy? That's just dumb," she said.
Almost as bad as the critics are the TV shows, movies and reports condoning that behavior.
"It's disappointing the media keeps it alive and fuels that fire, because I love to eat," Lawrence explained.
More candidly, the 23-year-old revealed previously that film staff would attempt to embarrass her into losing weight.
"I was young. It was just the kind of s--- that actresses have to go through. Somebody told me I was fat, that I was going to get fired if I didn't lose a certain amount of weight," she told Harper's Bazaar. "They brought in picture of me where I was basically naked, and told me to use them as motivation for my diet."
"They thought that because of the way my career had gone, it wouldn't still hurt me. That somehow, after I won an Oscar, I'm above it all," she continued. "I was little girl. I was hurt. … I know it'll never happen to me again. If anybody even tries to whisper the word 'diet,' I'm like, 'You can go f--- yourself.'"
Critics in The New York Times and other outlets had pointed out that Lawrence was a "bad fit" for Katniss Everdeen, the tough warrior and archer participating in the Hunger Games, because she didn't seem starved into submission like in the Suzanne Collins novels.
"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" is slated for release Nov. 22, 2013.
