Katy Perry at VMAs: Red Carpet and Closing Performance Recapped
Katy Perry took the MTV 2013 Video Music Awards by storm in Brooklyn, New York on Sunday night.
The "Firework" singer first stepped onto the red carpet in a leopard dress that featured fur and jewels across the top ahead of the awards ceremony.
Perry completed her dress by Emanuel Ungaro with a high ponytail and a gold grill in her mouth that read "Roar," according to the New York Daily News.
"Tonight's custom #ROAR GRILL courtesy of the FAMED @tvjohnny," Perry wrote of the unique mouth accessory via Twitter.
Richard Simmons, who planted a kiss on Perry's hand, joined the singer on the red carpet for a couple of photos.
In addition to her red carpet appearance, the 28-year-old singer also performed her brand new single "Roar" for the first time ever in the closing moments of the awards ceremony.
With the backdrop of the Brooklyn Bridge, Perry took the stage clad as a boxer in a makeshift boxing ring where she threw punches and even briefly used a jump rope during the performance.

"Roar" is the first single off of the singer's third upcoming album "Prism," which hits theaters Oct. 23.
Referring to a different brand new album, Perry touched on her personal life with a tweet promoting John Mayer's "Paradise Valley" last week.
"Something VERY special is happening @ midnight EST tonight on ITUNES! My incredible, inspiring boyfriend @JohnMayer will release a Spectacular record called, PARADISE VALLEY," the singer posted to Twitter last week.
The tweet was not the first time the singer has discussed Mayer. Earlier this summer, Perry told Vogue magazine that she was "still madly in love" with the "Gravity" singer.
Meanwhile, Mayer's new album includes a duet with Perry entitled "Who You Love." The ballad sheds light on the singers' on-and-off-again relationship, and even sees Mayer admitting fault.
"I tried to run before / But I'm not running anymore / 'Cause I've fought against it hard enough to know, that you love who you love," the Grammy Award-winning singer croons on the track.
"You can't make yourself stop dreaming who you're dreaming of / It it's who you love then it's who you love," the lyrics continue.
