Kindle Fire Successor to Be Lighter and Sport Better Look

The successor to the wildly popular Amazon Kindle Fire tablet will be lighter and sport a better look, according to a new report.

AllThingsD released a report earlier this week that stated that Amazon was working on a higher-resolution Kindle Fire that is lighter than the current version. It will also be "easier to look at" and launch in the latter part of the third quarter of this year.

The device is rumored to feature a display with a 1280 x 800 resolution, compared to the 1024 x 600 featured on the original Kindle Fire. The new resolution will change the tablets aspect ratio from 10:6 to 16:10 making developers have to rework their applications to make them compatible.

The company is also reportedly working on reducing the weight of the tablet by making it thinner. Recent rumors have stated that Amazon might be eliminating the plastic casing and replacing it with metal.

And while Amazon is in the process of creating and perfecting the new Kindle Fire, Google, its greatest competitor, is readying the release of the Nexus 7 tablet.

The device is already available for pre-order at Best Buy and has received rave reviews from publications such as CNET and 9to5 Google.

Apple is also rumored to be working on a 7-inch iPad that could be released as early as the fall.

Amazon truly needs to pull out the big guns this go-round in order to maintain its place at the top of the 7-inch tablet market.

The Kindle Fire burst on the scene last year and become the first true competition for Apple's iPad. It also created a new market for smaller tablets that sparked the interest of other manufacturers.
