Lady Gaga Indonesia Concert Canceled; Singer's Safety Under Threat
Lady Gaga has canceled her Indonesia concert due to security concerns following a wave of criticism from Islamic groups who have described her as "vulgar."
The news was announced through the website of local promoters Big Daddy Entertainment, who confirmed that 100 percent refunds would be offered to those who had bought tickets.
The concert that was scheduled for June 3 in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, was sold out. It was part of Lady Gaga's increasingly controversial Asian leg of her worldwide "Born This Way Ball" tour.
The singer confirmed the cancellation herself through her Twitter account, posting a tweet to her 25 million followers saying, "We had to cancel the concert in Indonesia. I'm so very sorry to the fans and just as devastated as you if not more. You are everything to me."
She added, "I will try to put together something special for you. My love for Indonesia has only grown."
Lady Gaga has sparked outrage in a number of countries already on the Asian leg of her tour. Recently Salim Alatas, the head of the Islamic Defender Front had earlier this month described Gaga as a "vulgar singer who wears only panties and a bra when she sings and she stated she is the envoy of the devil's child and that she will spread satanic teaching."
The cancellation of the Jakarta concert was reportedly made out of fears for Gaga's safety as well as that for the 50,000 fans who were set to attend.
