'Mad Men' Season 7 Spoilers: Creator Suggests Don Use Honesty to 'Rectify Everything'
"Mad Men" returns to AMC this Sunday, May 4 with an episode entitled "The Monolith."
Fans are looking forward to learning the answers to burning questions such as who was Don Draper (Jon Hamm) trying to get in touch with before solemnly hanging up the phone last week, and whether or not his marriage to Megan will last. While "Mad Men" creator Matthew Weiner is staunchly secretive about the AMC drama, the writer opened up about his main character while speaking to NPR this week. In doing so, Weiner revealed some possible spoilers while touching on Don's ability to "rectify everything."
"I don't really have a lot of judgment for Don," Weiner started. "He makes me nervous. I feel bad for him. I want him to be able to get out of things. I know that he has a lot of love in his heart. I just don't know if it's possible to stand up and rectify everything by telling the truth."
The seventh and final season of "Mad Men" will air in two parts, with seven episodes airing this year, and seven beginning next spring. Looking ahead to the series finale, Weiner admitted that he is currently working on episode 12, but has not yet written the last two installments. Nevertheless, Weiner discussed the big themes within the final season.
"There's a lot happening at once as the show ends, so what I've been thinking about is: What is the substance of your life? Who are the people you make a difference with? What is your job? At what point do you start looking at yourself in an honest way," Weiner revealed to NPR.
"[The question] 'Is change possible' is a big part of it," he added. "There's been a lot of apologizing going on in the show. Don certainly owes people apologies, but the reception of an apology, the quality of mercy, how people behave to your change is sometimes the thing that keeps you from changing."
In closing, Weiner warned "Mad Men" fans that many things will be revealed about Don.
"I'm going to be leaving these characters in a place where they belong and I'm trying to take Don on a journey that will help you understand something about him," he concluded.
"Mad Men" airs Sundays on AMC at 10 p.m. EST. The synopsis for "The Monolith" is as follows: "Sterling Cooper & Partners prepares for a guest; Don calls an old friend; Roger confronts problems at home; Pete underestimates Peggy."
