Mariah Carey Returns to the Stage for 'Big Drama' in NYC
Mariah Carey returned to the stage for the first time since her children were born last April, performing for 150 fans at a New York City stage Thursday night.
Pop singer Mariah Carey sang at Gotham Hall for 30 minutes, recounting some of her best hits like "Shake It Off," "Touch My Body," and "Obsessed," among others. The mother of two didn't know just how much the world had missed her sultry singing, but she found out that night.
"I didn't really know it was a big drama like that," the songstress told Rolling Stone. Many outlets covered her performance.
"It's my first performance since having 'dem babies'!" she told the crowd referring to her twins, Moroccan and Monroe. "I really wanted to bring them here tonight, but Monroe is sometimes shy and takes a while to warm up to an audience … It's time for them to be asleep," she joked.
It took a while for Mariah to "warm up" as well: at her request, the spotlight was turned off at her request while she dabbed herself with tissues.
Once she was ready though, Carey belted out some of her most iconic hits in her floor-length, shapely black dress. She sang "We Belong Together" and "Always Be My Baby," the latter being dedicated to her children.
Mariah also sang a tribute to the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson, with a rendition of "I'll Be There."
"We miss you, Michael," she whispered, after delivering the poignant duet with Trey Lorenz.
The mini-concert was part of a bigger initiative by Caesar's Entertainment. Four concerts were scheduled simultaneously: P. Diddy and Mariah Carey in New York, Mary J. Blige and Gavin DeGraw in New Orleans, Cee-Lo and Lil Wayne in Los Angeles, and Maroon 5 with Sara Bareilles in Chicago. The company's aim was to promote their brand, so the concerts were broadcast online, to the chagrin of Carey.
"We can't do anything with it being documented," the pop diva told the crowd. "Doesn't it freak you out at all?"
Still, Mariah fans only got a taste of what the songstress can do. 30 minutes was nothing compared to her usual, much longer concerts, but it was a nice warm-up and welcome back to the stage.
"Catch me at my real show next time," Carey joked.
