Megan Hilty, Katharine McPhee Make 'Smash' the New 'Glee'
Katharine McPhee and Megan Hilty have caused quite the stir in their new debut of "Smash" which premiered on Monday and prompted viewers to share some very positive reviews.
The new show, which followed the season premiere of "The Voice," revolves around the making of a musical based around Marilyn Monroe. The show features Debra Messing, Anjelica Huston, and Broadway star Megan Hilty.
Entertainment Weekly said "this glitzy, refreshingly earnest show's potential is nothing short of thrilling TV."
The Numbers reported that "Smash" scored the highest 18-49 rating for any episode of a regular 10 p.m. drama on ABC, CBS or NBC on any night of the week so far this season. The rating is based on adults aged 18-49.
During the show Karen, played by Katharine McPhee, is up against Broadway veteran, Ivy Lynn, played by Megan Hilty for the role of Marilyn Monroe. According to the Huffington Post, Hilty is already taking the competition off stage.
"I've already gotten t-shirts sent to me," the Broadway star said. "I plan on rocking my Team Karen t-shirt full force. Every show needs a good rivalry, right?"
Hollywood Scoop TV reported that "Smash" debuted with 11.5 million viewers. The number reveals "the most for the network in that time slot in more than three years," Hollywood Scoop stated.
"After waiting so long for the pilot, I was not disappointed at all. Great cast, super duper musical numbers even in the first show, more than realistic audition scenes, and interesting story lines. We all know who we want to win the role of Marilyn ... don't we!" the user Director Tom wrote on MTV's blog site.
Another user also had a positive review. "Great start. There are so many directions this show can go. Wow," Ronald said.
Even GQ writer David Gordon has overcome his jazz hand phobia and fear of musicals for long enough to accept that he might have a sincere liking for the new show. "After twenty minutes, to my great horror and even greater perplexity, I realized I liked it," Gordon wrote in a GQ review.
An Entertainment Weekly blogger, geek, compared the new musical to "Glee."
"Loved this. So much better than Glee," geek wrote. "By a mile. There's something effortless about this show. It doesn't seem to be forcing anything. It just glides."
