Michelle Williams Gets 'Honest' About Cancelled 'Jesus Christ Superstar' Tour
Michelle Williams' "Jesus Christ Superstar" arena tour debut may have been cancelled but the 32-year-old singer formerly of Destiny's Child is not spending too much time being sad about the lost opportunity.
In fact, Williams insists that the cancellation may free her up for even more opportunities on the horizon.
"I'll be honest and say this frees me up to work my album for the summer," she told The Hollywood Reporter. "I know there were sacrifices made for the tour. I couldn't take certain offers that came my way so now we're able to capture some of those opportunities again."
Jesus Christ Superstar, the rock opera put together by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, was scheduled to tour 50 North American cities over the summer. However, The New York Times announced that the show was abruptly canceled due to low ticket sales.
Ben Forster, the British actor who would have played Jesus Christ in the show, expressed his sorrow after the news had broken.
"My heart is broken. My beautiful talented cast and company I adore," Foster tweeted last week. "This wonderful show & opportunity is over. I'm so sorry I am devastated."
Michael Cohl promoted the tour released a statement about the cancellation which was obtained by the New York Times.
"It became obvious the shows were in trouble, but we tried until the last moment to give it every chance to turn around," Cohl said in the statement. "In the end, it just did not make business sense to continue, and we didn't want the cast to endure playing to disappointing audiences."
Williams would have been joined on stage by J.C. Chasez , formerly of N Sync', who would have played Pontius Pilate and Brandon Boyd of Incubus as Judas Iscariot.
