An arrest has been made in the case of the death of a young mother who was struck by a stray bullet as she stood in the doorway of her home. Corderious Domini McClellan has been charged with capital murder in the death of Sherri Williams.

McClellan peacefully surrendered to them on Tuesday night and is currently being held without bond, police told the Associated Press. McClellan and another person got into an argument at a nearby store; their fight escalated and McClellan began pursuing the person and fired a gun.

Sherri Williams, 24, was standing in the doorway of her home holding her 10-day-old son and was struck by the bullet. Fortunately the baby was not hurt, but Williams was pronounced dead at her home.

"She was not the target," Sgt. Johnny Williams Jr. told AL.com.

Police released a description of the man they believed responsible for the crime and asked for the public's help in finding justice for the young mother.

"I'm so tore up. I feel her just like she's sitting right here," Sherri's mother, Rinda Williams, told Fox News. "Shots started ringing out over at the store and somehow bullets end up over here. It looked like it hit the door, bounced off the door and hit [Sherri] right in the chest. She shield the baby so hard, when the neighbor took the baby out of her arms … blood just gushing everywhere."

She also described her daughter as "a good person" and said she hoped that the person responsible for her daughter's death would do the right thing and turn himself in.

Williams left behind two other children: a 6-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son. The little girl was at school at the time of the shooting, but the boy was at home; thankfully he was not injured and may not have seen his mother get shot.

"For a long time, she was trying to get out of here," Sherri's uncle, Kerry Jackson, told the Birmingham News.
