Moto X Vs. iPhone 5: 2013 Android Takes on 2012 Apple
The Moto X Phone was recently unveiled by Motorola and the new device gives some of the current smartphones on the market a run for their money.
Motorola seemed to be paying attention to the iPhone when crafting this new device as it was made to be convenient and easy to carry around and hold in one hand. This is something Samsung cannot say about its Galaxy S4 as the screen is far too big for this type of accessibility. So how does the Moto X stack up against Apple's flagship in other departments?
Design
The Moto X features a plastic build with a customizable back that has become a selling point for the company. Customers can choose from up to 16 different back covers for the device. There is even the option to purchase one made from wood that is expected to launch in Q4. The iPhone 5 features a sturdy aluminum display that is one of the finest in the market. Both are unique in their own ways and provide customers with a device they could show off to their friends.
Display
The Moto X comes with a 4.7-inch display with 1280x720 resolution at 313 ppi. The iPhone 5 features a 4-inch retina display with 1136x640 resolution at 326 ppi. Both of these smartphones are behind in terms of delivering high-definition at optimum 1080p level, but both still probably show off videos and pictures in a way that does justice to their great cameras and speeds. It is not a noticeable enough difference to make either display a selling point.
Speed
The Moto X packs a dual-core 1.7GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro with 2GB RAM. The iPhone 5 comes with the company's A6 chip that runs a 1.3GHz dual-core processor with 1GB RAM. The Moto X is a 2013 phone which explains the gap in specs. Apple's device is still impressive as it does a great job in running iOS giving a smoother experience than what is found on some Android devices.
Battery
Motorola is the obvious winner in this department as the Moto X packs a 2200mAh battery that lasts quite long. The iPhone 5 comes with a 1440mAh battery that must be charged on a daily basis. The pack on the Moto X could probably make it past that point.
Camera
The iPhone 5 has an 8-megapixel camera and the Moto X comes with a 10-megapixel rear shooter. The Clear Pixel technology on the Moto X should give it a slight advantage in picture taking as judging the camera's on just megapixels is not sufficient enough.
Conclusion
The iPhone 5 works great and for its time was a fantastic device. But Apple needs to release something quickly. The spec divide is far too wide and the competition is really starting to heat up. The Moto X Phone seems to be stuck somewhere between this year and last year with the absence of a true HD 1080p display and quad-core processor. It is still a more than solid device and at the same price as Apple's iPhone on contract, it is probably the better buy until the iPhone successor is released in the coming months.
