MTV Names Katy Perry Its First 'Artist of the Year'
MTV has named Pop singer Katy Perry as their choice for the music channel’s first ever artist of the year distinction.
An MTV internal panel of experts deliberated between Perry and singer Adele, but chose Perry in the end, AP has reported Friday.
In August, Perry’s album “Teenage Dream” tied the late King of Pop Michael Jackson's "Bad" record as the only album to produce five No. 1 singles. Perry received a special achievement award at this year’s American Music Awards for leveling Jackson’s record.
Perry’s current single "The One That Got Away," is on its way to possibly defeating the record.
Amy Doyle, the network’s chief of music programming, told AP Perry’s reign this year was undeniable.
"You just really felt her presence in pop culture throughout the year," Doyle said.
Singer Adele's "Rolling in the Deep,” from the critically acclaimed album “21,” was chosen as the top song of 2011. Adele was up against Nicki Minaj’s “Super Bass” and Rihanna’s “We Found Love."
Previously, different sections of MTV would make their own "best of" lists. This year, the network chose to bring together all of its television and online divisions to emphasize MTV's music roots, Doyle said to AP.
Seven panelists made the final decisions for the distinctions. MTV featured some of the debates on its programming this week.
