National Cheesecake Day Today, Score Deals On Dessert
Today is National Cheesecake Day and people everywhere are celebrating the decadent dessert.
An unofficial holiday, National Cheesecake Day arrives during the hot summer month of July each year.
The refrigerated, creamy treat makes a perfect dessert for summer, and it can even be garnished with fruit such as strawberries and peaches, which are in season in July.
Cheesecake is made from a mixture of soft, fresh cheese, eggs and sugar that is usually baked on a crust made from graham cracker crumbs or crumbled cookies.
Aside from the classic, original cheesecake flavor, other toppings, flavors and fillings vary from coffee, pumpkin, key lime, nuts, candy, and countless others.
Another popular cheesecake recipe is the famous "marble" cheesecake, which is almond flavored cheesecake with bittersweet chocolate swirled through for a marbled effect.
The sweet dish also comes in several national varieties. In the U.S. alone, there are at least eight different styles.
Among the most famous recipes are New York-style cheesecake, which uses heavy cream or sour cream, Pennsylvania Dutch-style cheesecake that yields a lighter texture, country-style cheesecake that uses buttermilk, and Chicago-style cheesecake, which sees firm outsides with a soft, creamy center, among other styles.
In Europe, cheesecakes in the U.K. and Ireland are usually made with a base of buttered biscuits and topped with fruit compote in flavors such as blackcurrant, passion fruit and raspberry, among others.
Furthermore, Germany, Bulgaria, Italy, and several other European countries have their own styled cheesecakes, similar to countries in South America, Asia, and in Australia.
Meanwhile, National Cheesecake Day made waves on Twitter Tuesday.
"Today is National Cheesecake Day as if anyone needs an excuse to eat cheesecake," wrote Marie.
Women's Health magazine posted a healthy recipe, writing, "Happy National Cheesecake Day! To celebrate this glorious occasion without ruining your gym time, try one of these."
Moreover, cheesecake vendors such as the Cheesecake Factory are partaking in the celebrations.
With locations across the U.S., the Cheesecake Factory is offering slices of cheesecake at half price; one slice per guest, dine-in only.
