Nexus TV to Launch in 2014: Device to Play Movies, Games and Music

Google is planning to launch its new Nexus TV product during the first half of 2014, according to a new report.

A publication known as The Information claims the device will be aggressively priced and will stream video from various sources such as Netflix Hulu and YouTube. It will also have the ability to play certain video games.

The Nexus TV could come with a touchpad remote or work with Android devices. However, the report does not reveal which of these controls it will utilize. Google has already been showing the set-top box to developers and started doing so in the fall of this year.

This is not the first time the Nexus TV is being reported on. An article that appeared in The Wall Street Journal back in July revealed that the company showed off a device similar to what is spoken of in the new report at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas with Google's Andy Rubin in charge of private demonstrations. A motion sensor is rumored to be on board.

Another recent report from GigaOM stated that Google was interested in reinventing its Google TV brand as Android TV due to its lack of mainstream success. However, the company has not confirmed any information on a name change at this time.

The Nexus TV would be Google's third attempt at providing consumers with a full-on entertainment device. The other two would be the axed Nexus Q media hub and the extremely popular Chromecast adapter. Google has yet to launch a Google TV device on its own.

Streaming content and eco-systems seem like the perfect way to lock customers into an array of other Google products so if this Nexus TV is a success, the Android platform will certainly become more popular overall.
