Nintendo 'Dramatically Over-Delivered' on Number of Switch Units During Launch
Gaming giant Nintendo is in the spotlight again, thanks to the continuing success of the Nintendo Switch. With the holiday season fast approaching, the gaming world will again set their eyes on the company, as it tries to meet the potential wave of demand for its flagship console.
Speaking to Mashable, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said that contrary to popular notion, they actually overshot their production for the Switch during its launching last March.
"We actually sold through almost 2.8 million units, so we dramatically over delivered," said Fils-Aime. "So what do some of the consumers on Reddit say? 'Gosh, Nintendo, if you would've made more you would've sold more.' Well, we did make more! And certainly we're on a pace to supply in the current fiscal year 10 million units," he added.
The comment stemmed from the analysts' prediction that public demand for the console on its launch date will be lower than 2 million units. In terms of meeting the demand for the holiday season, the company is bent on making the adjustments, as it is totally a different scenario compared to the console's launching.
It can be recalled that retailers in and out of the U.S. reported that they had been running out of stocks. Walmart, GameStop, and Target have all confirmed they were low on supply. The same goes for retailers in Japan. In turn, Nintendo confirmed in a statement to The Wall Street Journal that they will increase their production.
"We're doing everything we can to make sure everyone who wants to buy a Nintendo Switch system can do so," said Nintendo. "We will ramp up production for the holiday period, which has been factored into our forecast," the company's statement went on to say.
Apart from the Nintendo Switch, the SNES Classic Edition is also another thing that will keep the company busy in the coming months. Launching this coming Sept. 29, the throwback console is projected to receive the same reception as the NES Classic Edition that sold out like pancakes.
