NLDS Game 4 NLDS Recap, Scores & Highlights: Chicago Cubs Enters NLCS, Ends San Francisco Giants MLB Playoffs 2016 Run
The Giants had been invincible in their last 10 elimination games in the playoffs. But, the win streak that dates back since 2003 ended Tuesday.
It was a different tale for the two cities. San Francisco was hoping to continue their even-year magic run, while Chicago was out to break the Billy the Goat curse.
But, when the game ended Tuesday evening at the AT&T Park, the Cubs found themselves back in the NLCS. For two consecutive years, the North Siders were able to put themselves in the position to contend for the pennant after their game 4 NLDS victory against the Giants.
And, it is not just some win, mind you; The Cubs staged a rousing comeback in the ninth inning to complete a stunning run that saw Giants' 5-2 lead heading into the top ninth disappear.
It was that kind of a storyline that would go down as a classic in the Major's postseason history.
The Chicago Cubs Are Out to Break Billy's Curse
The Cubs are out to prove themselves again that they can win a Championship Series and that they are worthy of a World Series stint this year.
The Chicago-based squad had their chances last year, only to stumble badly and allow the New York Mets to sweep them in their series. The Billy the Goat curse was all too real at that time.
The team is hoping they can break the spell this time around and move forward to the World Series, which they haven't done for more than 70 years. The Cubs are the hungriest team in the league after winning their last title back in 1908. That's more than a century ago.
After falling behind early, the Cubs regain their composure in the ninth and scored four runs against five of the Giants' relief pitchers in rotation.
With a Javier Baez's RBI single, a Willson Contreras two-run single, and a Ben Zobrist RBI double, the Cubs were able to complete a rare feat, overcoming a three-run deficit in the ninth inning to win a playoff clincher.
The San Francisco Giants' Even-Year Magic Was Over
It was one of those unforgettable nights for the Giants. For one, they weren't able to score a single homer, as they have failed to do so in the last three games of the NLDS.
San Francisco erected a 5-2 lead in the fifth, courtesy of Conor Gillaspie and Joe Panik. Matt Moore had an outstanding game pitching for eight innings, resulting to 10 strikeouts and just one run. But, it was all for naught.
The Giants had been invincible in their last 10 elimination games in the playoffs. But, the win streak that dates back since 2003 ended Tuesday.
The Cubs, meanwhile, will be back at home at the Wrigley Field in Illinois to open their best-of-seven series against the winner from the other NLDS series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Washington Nationals.
