4. Republican wins NYC City Council seat in the Bronx for first time in 40 years
As Kentucky made headlines for re-electing a Democrat governor despite voting overwhelmingly Republican at the presidential level, a New York City Council district that overwhelmingly supported President Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election elected a Republican.
With 98% of the vote in, unofficial results compiled by the New York City Board of Elections show that Republican Kristy Marmorato won the City Council seat encompassing the 13th Council District with 52.46% of the vote. Democrat Marjorie Velazquez, the incumbent, received 46.82% of the vote.
RRH Elections, which describes itself as a “Republican blog for election news & analysis,” elaborated on the implications of Marmorato’s win in a thread on X Tuesday night. It noted that the district, based in the East Bronx, supported Biden by 35 points and has a majority-minority population with, Hispanics making up 44% of the district and blacks comprising 23%. RRH Elections explained that “the last time the Bronx elected a Republican city councilor was 1981.”
Stunning possible pickup for the GOP in the East Bronx! This Hochul +7, Biden +35 is 44% Hispanic and 23% Black, with a white ethnic minoity. Would be the first GOP council seat in the Bronx in many, many years. https://t.co/CE0zGkUHax
