Ohio voters legalize marijuana, NYC elects a Republican: 5 takeaways from the nation's election results
5. Loudoun County Commonwealth’s Attorney appears headed for defeat
Unofficial election results from Loudoun County, Virginia, show Republican Bob Anderson narrowly leading Democrat Buta Biberaj in the race for the Commonwealth’s Attorney. While Republicans failed to secure majorities in both chambers of the state Legislature, the development in Loudoun County is seen as a likely victory for the parental rights movement that helped Republicans win the majority in the House of Delegates two years ago.
Loudoun County made national headlines in 2021 after news broke of two separate sexual assaults occurred at high schools in the Loudoun County School District at the hands of a male student who identified as “gender fluid.” One of the assaults was committed against a female student in the girls’ bathroom at Stone Bridge High School, while the other took place at the beginning of the following school year after the perpetrator was transferred to a different school.
The first sexual assault occurred not long before the school board was considering implementing a policy allowing male students who identify as trans to enter girls' restrooms, locker rooms and showers, and vice versa. The public did not learn about what happened at Stone Bridge High School until well after the second assault took place, leading to allegations that school district officials withheld information about the incident in an effort to derail the passage of the trans-inclusive bathroom policy, which was approved that August.
A 2022 grand jury report implicated the Loudoun County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office as one of several parties responsible for “the tragic events that occurred.” At the time, Biberaj was leading the Loudoun County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office. Located near Washington, D.C., Loudoun County supported Biden by 25 points in the 2020 presidential election.
