OUYA Android Powered Gaming System Now Available for $99.99
The Android powered OUYA gaming system is now available to all consumers for $99.99.
The console has been available to those who invested in its development when it was up on kickstarter and now anyone can visit sites such as Amazon and purchase it. Demand for the system seems to be decent as the massive online retailer has already sold out of it.
GameStop did not start taking orders for the system yet. U.S. residents could also order the device from Best Buy, Target, and the official OUYA store for the same price.
U.K. customers could visit Amazon to purchase it, however, there is a 1 to 3 week estimated dispatch wait. The device is priced at £99.99 making it a bit more expensive than the U.S. Another U.K. retailer known as Game is selling the OUYA for the same price and promises to ship it out in just 1 or 2 business days.
Canadian customers also can purchase OUYA on Amazon for CAD$99.99. It's currently in stock there.
The console has received mixed reviews thus far with some customers being a little upset over the lack of new games available for it. However, that's not an issue that can't be fixed.
The device was recently tested out by sites such as The Verge and Wired, and the general consensus was that the console has potential but there are still some kinks to be worked out in the meantime.
"The Ouya still has a ways to go before I'd call it a full-fledged home console competitor," wrote The Verge. "Even if I'm not convinced of its utility, though, I'm reassured that it's trying to offer something new and different, not just a rehashed set of Android games or another hardware gateway to the same content."
Wired discussed the potential of the console and the site's Chris Kohler expressed his excitement for its future game development, which will be open to all.
"Ouya's radical re-envisioning of television games doesn't stop with just recreating the iPhone on the TV. There's no difference," Uhrman says, "between a developer kit and a retail console- all you need to make games is the Ouya and a PC."
