Patrick Stewart First Pizza Explained

Patrick Stewart made waves after sharing a shocking first-time experience- eatinga slice of pizza. As one of the most popular meals the world over, it seems hard to believe that the 72-year-old Brit had never eaten the saucy dish.

However, Stewart took to Twitter on Wednesday informing his followers of the predicament.

"My first ever pizza 'slice,'" wrote the actor. "Please note: the authentic NY fold."

In the post, the "Star Trek" actor added a photo of himself in a baseball cap holding both a drink and a large slice of pizza folded in half with large bites taken out of it.

The tweet had fans asking if perhaps the actor had only just now sampled New York pizza, or if it was his first slice ever.

Clearing up the speculation, Stewart spoke to New York magazine.

"People misunderstood, there was a school of thought that I had eaten my first pizza, but of course how could that possibly be true," the actor went on to explain.

"I would have had to have stayed locked up in a cellar," Stewart joked. "But nevertheless, this was my first slice of pizza, which I was only eating because my fiancée and I were a little hungover yesterday morning and she said what we need is pizza and a soothing drink- and she was right."

Furthermore, the "X-Men" star noted that he had just moved to Brooklyn's Park Slope neighborhood, yet had never stopped for a slice of pizza.

"I know, it's hard to understand," the actor told New York magazine. "But, you know, I would go in there and order a pizza and eat a whole pizza. It was the concept of the slice that I had never encountered before."

Stewart noted that his first pizza slice was enjoyed at Brooklyn's well-established Smiling Pizza, and that he was "astonished" about the reactions people have had to his tweet.

Some of Twitter's reactions included William Shatner posting, "And I didn't @SirPatStew just say he never had pizza until this week? NOW you know why! UK pizza is not pizza!"

Stewart is currently engaged to singer Sunny Ozell, and the pair intend to marry in the U.S. with actor and friend Ian McKellen performing the ceremony, according to The New York Times.

Despite making waves over his pizza slice, Stewart is also hard at work combatting violence against women with Amnesty International. Watch a video of the actor passionately answering a question about how abuse affected him personally.
