PlayStation 4 Release Date: Developers Tell Gamers About New PlayStation; No Price Given

Game developers say that gamers should expect Sony's PlayStation 4 to be the last next-generation console from the company.

David Helgason and Nicholas Francis, co-founders of Unity Technologies said in a statement, "If Sony and Microsoft did the PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720, they would completely blow mobiles out of the water, and that's good if you want to make those big experiences."

Francis added, "But having something that's much more powerful than an Xbox in my cell-phone? What am I going to do with that? It's a small screen, I'm playing on the bus, everything is shaking, there's light coming in."

Francis predicts that home consoles might survive for one more console generation, "and then that will be it."

Helgason still believes that workflow management and upgrades for next gen-systems will still be around, though.

"What doesn't go away is the need for great workflows – the ability to put in a lot of complex content into scenes," Helgason said. "That may run out at some point, but we can think of so many ways we can improve that experience."

New reports surrounding Sony's rumored PlayStation 4 video game console are now surfacing.

For instance, Develop reported that Sony has begun preliminary work on the games for the console.

Meanwhile, Yanko Design recently created a futuristic rendition of Sony's rumored console.

In February of this year, Sony executive Kaz Hirai stated that the company didn't begin any work on another PlayStation console yet.

This past May however, a senior Sony executive announced that the company was working on a next generation console, later known as the PlayStation Vita.

Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Masaru Kato offered a statement to investors pointing to PlayStation 4: "For the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life. But this is a platform business, so for the future platform -- when we'll be introducing what product I cannot discuss that -- but our development work is already under way, so the costs are incurred there."

Sony has yet to offer any factual statements on the matter.
