'Property Brothers' Star Jonathan Scott Shares How Divorce Shaped Him

Drew Scott has been in the headlines recently not only because of his "Dancing with the Stars" stint, but also for his upcoming wedding with fiancée Linda Pham. This time, it is his brother, Jonathan's turn to be in the spotlight as he shared valuable lessons he had learned from a previous relationship.

The 39-year-old co-star of "Property Brothers" told Fox News that he used to be in a relationship with a girl named "Kelsey," who worked as an airline-crew scheduler. Surprisingly, the two even got married back in 2007 after being an item six years prior.

"I think when you are young and you don't really know what you want in life, you can commit to something and think at the time it is right," said Scott, who eventually divorced Kelsey after two years of marriage. Despite the bitter end to their relationship, Jonathan said that the outcome game him a fresh outlook on life.

"It really gives you perspective. Anyone who has been through failed relationships — even people in successful relationships — understand that you gain perspective about what is important to you," explained Jonathan.

Moreover, he said that he never talked about his divorce in the past, knowing how painful such an endeavor is. In an interview with PEOPLE, Jonathan acknowledged, however, that something good still came out after the divorce. "After that I felt defeated, but I learned a lot. I don't think I could enjoy what I have today with Jacinta if I hadn't gone through a failed marriage," said the expert contractor.

Drew, for his part, said that seeing his brother Jonathan going through divorce was also tough for him. He said that when the latter was still with his ex, they did not get to see him that often, considering that their family was very tight-knit.

When Jonathan and Kelsey split, Drew said that bringing him "back into the fold and let him know we're all here for support was a big thing."

"Property Brothers" airs on Thursdays at 9 p.m. EDT on HGTV.
