PS4 Sales Success Attributed to Sony's Targeting of Wii Owners

The PS4's sales success could be attributed to more than just the console's capabilities, according to the company who made it.

Sony Computer Entertainment president Andrew House recently stated to Eurogamer that the PS4 was made to cater to Wii owners who skipped the PS3 and Xbox 360, and believes that this helped to boost sales significantly.

"Our big opportunity is to welcome back an audience much earlier in the lifecycle that possibly bought into the Wii previously, he said. "Whether it's based on this is a really good all-round entertainment device for a family in addition to having great games, our consumer data suggests some of those people are already coming in now and that's what's contributing to the really great sales we had."

He also said that Sony used this data when deciding if it should remaster some of the more popular titles for the PS3 such as "The Last of Us." House feels the new versions will sell because there are many PS4 owners who never had a PS3 to play them.

"I've always looked with envy at the movie industry about what a great job they're able to do with taking content and making it work," he said. "Disney is the best example of this, right, of taking classic content and reintroducing it to audiences over time."

Sony's The Last of Us: Remastered will launch on July 29. No other remastered versions of PS3 titles for the PS4 have been announced at this time. Other possible games to be updated could include the Uncharted series, "Metal Gear Solid 4" and "Little Big Planet."

The PS4 was released in the winter of last year and become one of Sony's fastest selling products outpacing its greatest competitor, the Xbox One significantly.
