'Puss in Boots' Has Big Weekend Success - Why?
Wall Street analysts have attributed the success of DreamWorks’ new movie Puss in Boots to “unexpected weather.”
The animated film earned $34 million for its debut in theaters over the Halloween weekend, while having to compete with the World Series and an early snowstorm in the Northeast.
Of the total box office earnings, 51 percent derived from 3-D screenings, while seven percent came from IMAX theaters. The report indicated success, but not after considering Puss in Boots cost $130 million to produce.
Hollywood stars Salma Hayek, Antonio Banderas, Billy Bob Thornton, and Zach Galifianakis lend their voices to the film that is rated PG.
Featured under the placard Mother Goose Tales, Puss in Boots is internationally known character. The puss in boots also appears in the third act of Tchaikovsky’s ballet The Sleeping Beauty, and many other media appearances.
The clever cat which first appeared in the studio’s film Shrek marked DreamWork’s third-worst debut performance, trailing behind Flushed Away and Antz.
Parents who viewed early releases on Puss in Boots expressed disappointment and even concern over content in the film.
Speaking to The Christian Post, mother of three and pre-school teacher Katherine Jones from Peoria, Ariz. said Puss in Boots is not a film she has any intention of showing her young boys.
Upon viewing the film, Jones described the main character as “a conceited, Don Juan type cat,” and that the film is “the last thing I would take my kids to see.”
DreamWorks shares fell 9.3 percent to $18.24 during trading early Monday morning, bolstering widespread belief that the studio must begin to seek new franchises.
Paranormal Activity 3 took second place in this weekend’s box office ratings, and fell by 65 percent to $18.5 million. The film only cost $5 million to make, and earned over $80 million after being in theaters just ten days after its debut two weeks ago.
Justin Timberlake’s In Time fell below expectations earning $12 million in its opening weekend.
