Rick Perry Says, 'I Can Agree' With English as US First Language

Republican Presidential Candidate Rick Perry agreed with a questioner at a fundraiser for the Cerro Gordo County Republican Party in Mason City, Iowa, that English should be the official language of the United States.

"I don't know how the rest of the conservatives in the room feel," a questioner said at the fundraiser. "Personally, I'm fed up with seeing the directions on every single product on every single shelf of every single store written in foreign languages. And I'd like to say English should be the official language of government in this country."

The Texas Governor diplomatically agreed. "That is a statement. That's not a question. And I can agree with that," Perry responded, without any further explanation.

Influential Republican Rep. Steve King of Iowa also attended the fundraiser. Before the event, King told reporters he is unsure if he would endorse any Republican candidate in the race. "At this point, I just don't know," King said.

"I've asked him for his endorsement more times than I asked my wife to get married!" Perry told reporters when asked about his push for King’s endorsement, MSNBC reported.

"I told him I'm going to keep asking," Perry added.

A spokesperson for Perry told MSNBC that although the governor has been open to a law that would make English the official language of the United States, he views other social and economic issues as more important for legislation.
