Rihanna 'Girls' Diss? Singer Rejected HBO's Offer for 'Talk That Talk'
Rihanna declined an offer involving her song "Talk That Talk" being used on HBO's hit show "Girls," according to reports this week.
Manish Raval, the music supervisor for the television series, revealed in a recent interview that "Talk That Talk" was wanted for a drug-fueled party scene during season two.
However, Rihanna did not permit "Girls" showrunners any rights to the song, according to Raval via Radio.com.
The music supervisor sat down with the music site about why the Barbadian singer said no.
"You know, honestly, I don't know," Raval said. "They didn't give a reason, we didn't ask for a reason. So I can't speculate as to why, but you know, it's a happy incident."
Instead of "Talk That Talk," Icona Pop's "I Love It" was used on the scene in "Girls." Consequently, Icona Pop has catapulted into stardom.
"She said no and we happened to find the Icona Pop song," Raval noted.
Possible reasons for Rihanna rejecting HBO's offer could include that her record company wanted more money for using "Talk That Talk."
Also, the "Girls" scene in question involved cocaine, making it understandable why Rihanna would want to distance herself from the additive and dangerous drug, despite her outspoken affinity for marijuana.
Meanwhile, Raval went on to discuss what "Girls" fans can expect from the newest season the show, music-wise. The third season will feature unreleased songs by Beck, Lily Allen, Miguel, and Jenny Lewis.
Season three of "Girls" kicks off on HBO this Sunday, Jan. 12. Watch the trailer here.
During a panel discussion with the Television Critics Association, "Girls" creator Lena Dunham defended her characters' choices on the show, including her frequent and jarring nudity.
"It's because it's a realistic expression of what it's like to be alive," Dunham snapped, according to People. "I think, and I totally get it. If you are not into me, that's your problem, and you're going to have to work that out with professionals."
