Russell Brand Won't Take $20 Million from Katy Perry in Divorce
Russell Brand filed final divorce papers on Tuesday and he is refusing any spousal support from estranged wife Katy Perry.
Brand, 36, is entitled to 50 percent of Perry's estimated $40 million fortune, which equates to approximately $20 million in spousal support because they did not have a prenuptial agreement, but he doesn't want it, according to TMZ.
Although 27-year-old Perry was the higher earner throughout their 14-month marriage, reportedly raking in $44 million between 2010 and 2011, Russell has no desire to take any of Perry's money, something sources attribute to his personal values.
"This divorce is as amicable as it gets, and Russell was a mensch (Yiddish for a good person)," one source told TMZ.
The couple, who married in Oct. 2010, will be divorced six months from now, which is standard procedure under California law and there are not likely to be any disputes between the pair.
Brand, a British comedian, filed for divorce from his pop star wife in Dec. 2011 and cited "irreconcilable differences" after months of divorce speculation.
"Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage. I'll always adore her and I know we'll remain friends," Brand said in a statement shortly after the filing.
According to sources, though Perry also wanted the divorce, she is not taking it lightly. She is "devastated," according to a family friend who spoke with Us Weekly Magazine.
"She was brought up with the belief marriage is forever and feels she failed. The plan was for Katy and Russell to have the holidays apart, then see if they wanted to go through with a separation," the source added.
The Christian Post previously reported that because Perry's parents are renowned evangelical Christians with solid values, she was not comfortable filing and agreed that it would be more ideal for Brand to initiate the divorce.
