Selena Gomez 'in Treatment' for Lupus, Grandparents Confirm
Selena Gomez has had a rough year and now her grandparents have confirmed that the teen actress is battling lupus. Her grandparents, who helped raise her, are concerned for her health and safety, given the stress of her career and the breakup with Justin Bieber.
"The doctor was telling her she needs to take some time out," Ricardo Gomez Sr. told Radar Online. "It just too much pressure what she's going through. It's just too much! She doesn't have a single day's break. It's getting to the point with all this pressure … that it's too much."
Making matters much worse is the battle Selena is fighting against lupus. It's a devastating illness that zaps energy and can cause joint pain, fevers, and other inflammation. One of the best ways to cope with lupus is to eat well and get proper rest and exercise.
"She's in treatment," Ricardo said. "She's getting along pretty good. What worries [us] more is that she doesn't know how to say no. She won't take time for herself to relax, to eat well."
Her grandparents, though, are working to provide whatever help they can, whether that be a home-cooked meal or moral support. She reportedly makes the trek to visit her grandparents in Texas at least once a month, but they say that they have not seen her since November, when she was really struggling.
"The sad part is we hardly see her nowadays, just by phone," Ricardo said. "When we talk on the phone we say, 'We don't see you in person but we see you in the news, in the newspaper, the TV. Are you okay?' She says, 'Yeah.'"
Selena has been working from a very young age without stopping for anything. Her grandparents are speaking out now, hoping that she will listen to doctors, her manager, and those who love her most and take time out to care for herself.
