Senate impeachment trial of President Trump Day 1: Over 12 hours of debate, ‘pettifogging’ and foul language
Long debate over rules
For the first day of the impeachment trial, the Senate debated the rules for the proceedings after around 13 hours of debate, spurred by Sen. Chick Schumer, D-N.Y., who wanted each of the Democrats amendments to be read individually instead of all 11 amendments being considered at one time.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's resolution passed in a 53-47 party-line vote, with Republicans defeating all 11 of the Democrats amendments.
The first day ended at 2 a.m.
The approved resolution will allow House case managers 24 hours of time over the course of three days to argue in favor of removing Trump from office.
Likewise, attorneys defending the president will have 24 hours over the course of three days to make their case against removal.
The Senate will then have 16 hours to submit questions to both sides before they entertain the option of subpoenaing documents or calling on witnesses.
