Seoul Music Award Show 2013: Psy Wins Grand Prize (VIDEO)
The 22nd annual Seoul Music awards took place on Thursday night in Seoul Korea. The ceremony concluded with Psy taking home grand prize.
South Korean artist Psy raised to international fame in 2012 with his YouTub hit "Gangam Style." The song's refrain, "Oppan Gangnam Style" meaning "big brother is gangam style" was voted as one of the most quoted phrases last year by the "Yale Book of Quotations."
On Thursday night in Korea, Psy was honored with the Daesang Award, which is the overall top award at the ceremony. But Psy's international success has also drawn a spotlight to "K-pop," or Korean pop music prompting interest in other Korean artists.
Who will be the next Psy? The all girl group Generation Girls announced last year that they too would attempt to break into the international music market by singing certain songs in English. The all girl group won the Daesang Award for two consecutive years in 2010 and 2011.
Super Junior won the award in 2012. The group won a Bonsang Award (Main Prize) this year at Thursday's award ceremony. They were also previously honored at the Golden Disk Awards. "Sexy, Free & Single," which featured 10 of Super Junior's 13 members won album of the year.
At the same ceremony, Psy won Best Single of the Year.
Other winners of the Main Award on Thursday night included Big Bang, Epik High, and 2NE1. G Dragon won Record of the Year. The R&B Ballad Award went to K. Will and the Hip Hop/Rap award to Double K.
