The ring was said to have been given to Tate, an American actress, by French director Roman Polanski, as a symbol of their love. It was later under controversy after Sharon Tate’s sister insisted that it was only a symbol, and not an engagement ring.

The ring was not on Sharon’s finger after the murder and was reportedly given to a friend instead. The friend later said that the ring had been stolen. The auction site has provided a paper signed by Polanski to verify it as Tate’s engagement ring.

Tate’s sister described the auction as “disgusting,” and said “42 years after and once again, the only thing that comes to mind is her death. I see it as re-victimizing the victim.”
